I am writing to share feedback on the satellite gear provided by your firm during my recent trip to Africa. As you recall, I am contracted to help establish a mining operation at a location deep within the jungle of Liberia, West Africa. The operational environment for the equipment was sub-Saharan tropical ( 90+ F / 90+% H ) with early season monsoonal rains. Think hot, humid, wet and dirty. Given the remote location and the challenge of actually getting to the site, an effective, durable satcom package was essential to both the job and safety. read more...

On a trip to the Yukon Territory my RV caught on fire on the Dempster Highway (dirt road) some 300 miles from the nearest town. On average 40 vehicles per day travel this wilderness road. Fortunately a Canadian Mounty found us stranded while making his weekly trip on the road. He used his satellite phone to get us a tow truck from Dawson. The next time we went to the Yukon I rented a satellite phone from All Road Communications for use in an emergency. Fortunately I only needed it for pleasure. read more...

I had rented the gear (BGAN, Iridium, charger, solar panel, etc) when the Salvation Army deployed me in a communications and logistics role following the earthquake. As I made the many-days journey to Haiti with the equipment (and my laptop) and then in the worst of the damaged city I was able to deploy it in many roles: As a web access point for critical communications activities with the UN and with the Salvation Army coordinating logistic movements, flight manifesting for numerous entities, even search and rescue work, as a means of matching needs, especially orphanages, with the available critical supplies of food water and medicine, as an email access unit for a lot of people. read more...

The unit worked great under extreme weather conditions in a very remote location. Despite concerns that our location in the Greenland icecap was too far north for the BGAN to hit the satellite (N 65 degrees, W 40 degress), it reliably connected each time we used it. The BGAN worked in dense fog, heavy cloud cover and constant rain, dropping out only once or twice. We placed the unit in a clear, waterproof bag to ensure that it would not get wet, and this solution worked very well. read more...
